Mace | Dagger

Project type

Quillon Dagger

Date

June 2024

Location

South Africa

The dagger is of my own design and represent my version of a renaissance quillon dagger from around the 16th century period. The inspiration comes from a medieval mace which has been the main driving factor behind the quillon finial and pommel design.

The concept design was drawn on paper using the Fibonacci sequence as a tool for the placement and proportions of the different elements.

I wanted to create an authentic, aged, gilded finish on the hilt. This is something that I have been wanting to incorporate in my work for some time and deemed it fitting for this piece.

The gilding was done with 23ct Gold foil via a diffusion bonding process similar to Keum-Boo. I am fortunate enough to have been able to engage with and learn from Peter Johnson and Bette Barnett on this and other gilding techniques. This is the first time using real gold on my work and is something that I will be incorporating in future projects.
